Devola, also known as Debol, is the older twin sister of Popola. Devola can be distinguished from her sister by her tousled, wavy hair and right-handedness. Devola, in contrast to Popola, is the "sociable" twin and presents herself with a more animated, outgoing, and playful personality.

To the Replicants under her care, she is merely the village's co-leader (alongside Popola) and bard providing entertainment for the villagers in the form of ancient songs.

During a playthrough, Devola can be found playing stringed instruments and singing beside the fountain or inside the tavern of the village. Her way of life puts her in an ideal position to learn of the rumours, troubles, and calls for help from across the region, information she uses to offer optional jobs to the protagonist.

Devola is referred to as a lightweight with alcohol compared to her sister. When intoxicated, she tends to behave cutely, even going so far as to begin meowing just like a kitten.

"You and us? We're the same! Tools in the hands of a master!"

— Devola, taunting the protagonist (NieR)

With Popola, she reluctantly attempts to stand in the way of the protagonist's advance towards the Shadowlord. She is soon defeated, dying in her sisters arms.

Following the side quest The Twins' Request, the player can obtain an enhancement item named Popola's Booze. This is an alcoholic beverage Devola favours and brews out of desert roses. Despite it being named after Popola, Devola is usually the only one who consumes the drink, as she leans on alcohol to cope more heavily this time around. Popola's Booze can be consumed in combat to heal completely and increase dealt melee damage by 50% for thirty seconds.
